How Antibiotics Were Invented
Antibiotics are used every day by Healthcare Professionals and are crucial for treating patients. However, you may be surprised by how they were invented!
In 1928, there was a Scottish guy named Alexander Fleming who was a chemist, and he was looking for ways on how to stop bacterial infections. One day after he and his wife came back from a vacation, and when Fleming returned back to his lab, he realized that he had left his Petri Dish out in the open. He looked closer though and saw that it had been overtaken by some kind of fungus/mold. Then he observed that everywhere there was mold, there wasn’t bacteria! Penicillium Notatum is a mold that is found in the air, and it kills bacteria but doesn’t affect human cells. It’s brilliant and in 1947, Fleming received a Nobel Prize!
